Hey it's Tucker Carlson.
You often hear people say the news is full of lies.
But most of the time that's not exactly right.
Much of what you see on television or read the New York Times is in fact true in the literal sense.
It could pass one of the media's own fact checks.
Lawyers would be willing to sign off on it. In fact they may have.

But that doesn't make it true. It's not true.  At
the most basic level the news you consume is a lie. A lie of the stealthiest and most Insidious kind.

Facts have been withheld on purpose.
Along with proportion and perspective.
You are being manipulated. How does that
work?

Let's see, If I tell you that a man has been unjustly arrested for armed robbery that is not strictly speaking a
lie. He may have been framed. At this point there's been no trial so no one can really say.
But if I don't mention the fact that the
same man has been arrested for the same
crime six times before am I really
informing you? 

No I'm not.  I'm misleading you. And that's what the news media are doing in every story that matters every
day of the week every week of the year.

What's it like to work in a system like that? After more than 30 years in the middle of it we could tell you stories.
The best you can hope for in the news business at this point is the freedom to  tell the fullest truth that you can.

But there are always limits. And you know that if you bump up against those limits often enough you will be fired for it. That's not a guess - it's guaranteed.

Every person who works in English language media understands that. The rule of what you can't say defines everything.  It's filthy really. And it's utterly corrupting.

You can't have a free Society if people aren't allowed to say what they think is true. Speech is the fundamental prerequisite for democracy.

That's why it's enshrined in the first of our constitutional amendments. 
Amazingly as of tonight there aren't many platforms left that allow free speech. The last big one remaining in the world, the only one is Twitter where we are now.
Twitter has long served as the place where our national conversation incubates and develops. Twitter is not a partisan site. Everybody's allowed here. And we think that's a good thing.

And yet for the most part the news that you see analyzed on Twitter comes from media organizations that are themselves thinly disguised propaganda outlets.
You see it on cable news.  You talk about it on Twitter. The result may feel like a debate. But actually the gatekeepers are still in charge.

We think that's a bad system. We know exactly how it works and we're sick of it.

Starting soon we'll be bringing a new version of the show we've been doing for the last six and a half years to Twitter.

We bring some other things too which we'll tell you about. But for now we're just grateful to be here. Free speech is the main right that you have. Without it you have no others.

여러분들 자주 듣지요. 뉴스는 거짓말로 가득 차 있다는 말을 하지만, 대부분의 경우 그 말 정확히는 옳은 말은
텔레비전에서 보는 대부분은 또는 뉴욕 타임스지에 읽는 것들은 실은 문자 그대로 사실이지요. 언론 자체들의 사실 체크를 통과할 겁니다. 변호사들은 기꺼이 그렇다고 서명할 것이고.
사실 그들은 그럴 거예요.

하지만 그런다고 사실을 진실로 만드는 건 아니죠. 그건 진실이 아니죠.
기껏해야 여러분이 듣는 기본적인 수준의 뉴스는 거짓말이예요.
가장 은밀한 뉴스며 가장 교활한 종류지요.

사실은 보류되어 왔지요, 의도적으로.

사실의 비율및 관점과 함께.
여러분들 조작당해 왔지요. 그게 어떻게 작용하냐고요?

보세요, 내가 여러분에게 한 남자가 무기 들고 강도질하다가 부당하게 잡혔다고 알려 준다면 그것은 엄격히 말하자면 거짓말이 아니지요. 그는 누명을 쓰게된지도 모르지요.  아직 그는 재판받지 않았으니 아무도 뭐라 말할 수 없어요. 그러나 그가 6번이나 체포되었었다는 사실을 언급하지 않는 다면 내가 여러분에게 제대로 정보를 알리고 있는 것인가요?

그러지 않는 거지요. 나는 여러분을 오해하게 하는 거죠.
그런데 그게 바로 언론들이 하는 짓이지요. 문제가 되는 모든 뉴스를  주일마다 매일, 년 중엔 매주에.

그런 조직체에서 일하는 것이 어떨 거 같나요?
30년 이상을 그런 와중에서 보낸 우리로서는 알려 줄 이야깃거리 많지요. 바라는바 최선은 이 시점에서 뉴스 산업에서 할 수 있는 한 진실을 전부 다 말할 수 있는 할 수 있는 자유지요.
그러나 항상 제한이 있어요. 그리고 그리고 아시다시피 그런 제한에 도전한다면  그것도 자주 그런다면 해고당하게 되지요.
이건 추측하는 게 아니라  틀림없는 일이지요.

영어권의 언론에서 일하는 모든 사람은 이 사실을 잘 이해하지요.
 무엇을 말해서는 안 된다는 규칙이 모든 것을 정해버리죠.
진짜 더럽지요.  그리고 이건 완전한  부패지요.

자유로운 사회를 가질 수 없지요,
사람들이 진실이라고 믿는 것을  말할 수 없다면
 언론의 자유는 민주주의의 기본 전제조건이지요.

그렇기 때문에 언론의 자유가 우리의 헌법 개정안에 1위로 신주처럼 꼽히는 거지요.

놀랍게도 오늘 이밤에 언론의 자유를 허용하는 연단이 많이 남아 있지 않지요.  이 세상에서 하나 남아 있는 유일한 큰 연단은  우리가 지금 들어와 있는 이 트위터뿐이지요.

트위터는 오랫동안, 이 나라의 대화가 시작되여 발전하게 하는 곳으로 사용되어 왔지요.   
 트위터는 편파적인 곳이 아니지요.
누구나 여기에서는 용납되지요..
그리고 우리는 그것이 좋은 것으로 생각합니다.

그러나 트위터에서 분석된 뉴스로 보는 대부분은  선전 매체로 얄팍하게  가장된 미디어 조직체에서 오고 있지요.
여러분들 그것을 케이블 뉴스에서 보고는
트위터에서 그걸 이야기 하지요. 결과는 토론처럼 느껴질 수 있지만
실제는 문지기들이  아직도 통제하고 있답니다.
우리는 그것이 나쁜 시스템이라고 생각합니다. 우린 그것이 정확히 어떻게 작동하는지 알고 있으며  우린 그게 지겨워요.

곧 시작하여, 우리는 지난 6년 반을 그동안 우리가 해왔던 쇼의 새로운 버전을 트위터에 가지고 올 것입니다.

우리는 앞으로 더  알려줄 몇 가지 다른 것들도 또한 가져올 겁니다.   지금 우리는 우리가 여기 있는 것만으로 감사합니다. 언론의 자유는 여러분들이 가진 주요 권리입니다. 그것 없이는 다른 것을 더 못가져요.
